A Brief Overview of the Precious Metal Refining / Recycling Process

Mechanical Processing

Before recycling, catalytic converters are sorted by type and quality. If it is not decanned, our hydraulic shearing machine is used to remove the catalytic converter casing.

Ceramics are also handled directly by Skrya. The honeycomb substrates are crushed further into fine powders in a ball mill machine after they have been broken and a representative sample is taken for analysis.

Sampling and Testing

The samples undergo further fine milling to achieve the particulate size needed for analysis. Then they are mixed thoroughly in a homegensing machine to ensure the materials meet the particulate size in the sieves and as well as the samples are accurately representative of the lot delivered.

The entire sample is now normally divided into 8 parts using the splitter machine. We further use the cross-mixing method and test 2 samples simultaneously. This ensures any potential human errors, mixing errors, etc are immediately identified. Unlike testing just a single sample, simultaneous sampling is far more accurate. Even a slight deviation beyond our tolerance is not accepted.

Next, the fine powder undergoes a Lost on Ignition Test (LOI). But generally, the common man understands this as a moisture test. Other than moisture, carbon content is also measured at this step.

Toll Refining Basis

Platinum, Palladium, and Rhodium are measured at Skrya’s facilities. We currently have close to 10 locations, in 3 continents, where materials can be delivered. These quick assays are used for hedging, forward pricing, and advance payments for customers.

The materials are then further sent to refineries or Independent Laboratories for a final ICP test to finalise the assay and conclude the analysis.

A split sample is available to all customers to check the results and verify for themselves. We have a robust and fair, challenge procedure if a customer chooses to challenge the results. This ensures fair treatment for all parties.

Payment Terms

The following payment methods are available:

We can make an advance payment after the lot has been sampled and analysed based on quick XRF results, and forward pricing or hedging is complete. Advances % varies from customer to customer based on track record and hedge vs final results comparison.

The balance can be settled after ICP is conducted and deductions for other charges are calculated.

Precious metals delivery

PGMs once are normally sold in the spot markets or at market close. We are also able to hold the metals in our metal accounts after your lease expires. There are some potential benefits for customers who are holding positions long term. These can also be transferred to other metal accounts.

We are also able to deliver metal bars if required, at a slight premium if you require physical delivery.
